Books about GRIT and Perseverance

TitleAuthorDescription
The Optimistic Child: A Proven Program to Safeguard Children Against Depression and Build Lifelong Resilience (non-fiction) Martin E. P. Seligman This is a handbook that spells out how to become more optimistic and therefore combat depression. I incorporated many of the activities listed in this book into my grit curriculum.
Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life (non-fiction) Martin. E. P. Seligman This book is more suited to adults. If you would like to enhance the quality of your life by learning how to become more optimistic, this is a must-read.
Character Strengths and Virtues: A Handbook and Classification (non-fiction) Christopher Peterson and Martin E. P. Seligman This is a HUGE and expensive, but very cool book that lists, defines, and classifies character qualities. What I love about this book is it's all about what right with people, instead of what's wrong with them.
"What if the Secret to Success is Failure?" (non-fiction) Paul Tough This is a NYT article that should be read by all parents and educators. It's a great read and was the jumping off point for my research on grit.
Promoting Grit, Tenacity, and Perseverance: Critical Factors for Success in the 21st Century (non-fiction) U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Technology (2013) This is a comprehensive, well-written brief recently released by the National DOE. It's exceptionally well done and helps to make the argument that education should not just be about academic test scores.
